Summer Boating Safety ⛵☀️

15 May 2026

In many parts of Canada, the Victoria Day long weekend marks the unofficial start of summer — and boating season! As you head out to enjoy time on the water with friends and family, a few simple reminders can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.

Summer Boating

Before you leave the dock, make sure your boat is properly equipped
(Common requirements for small pleasure craft under 6 m):

  • Lifejackets/PFDs: One CSA‑approved lifejacket or PFD for each person on board, easy to reach.
  • Buoyant heaving line: At least 15 m (50 ft).
  • Paddle, oar, or anchor: Plus at least 15 m of rope or chain.
  • Bailing device: A bailer or manual bilge pump.
  • Sound signal: A non‑electronic whistle or horn.
  • Lighting: A watertight flashlight (or flares for motorized boats).
  • Navigation lights: Required at night or in poor visibility.
  • Fire extinguisher: Required on motorized boats (5BC or 10BC).
  • Reboarding device: Required if your boat’s freeboard is over 0.5 m.

A few key rules to keep in mind:

  • Operator licensing: Anyone operating a motorized pleasure craft must carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).
  • No impaired boating: Alcohol and drugs impair judgment on the water just as they do on the road — boating while impaired is illegal and dangerous.
  • Emergency flares: Required for larger boats, or when operating farther from shore on large lakes.
  • Documentation: Keep your Pleasure Craft Licence (registration number) on board.

Before casting off, take a moment to check that everything is in good working order — and make sure everyone knows where safety equipment is stored.

And don’t forget the extras: sunscreen, hats, water, and a weather check can help make a great day on the water even better.

Here’s to a safe, fun-filled boating season and to making lasting summer memories.
